What to See and Do in Greece
Athens
The Acropolis is non-negotiable — go at 8 AM when the gates open, before the heat and the cruise groups. But Athens is more than ancient stones. Anafiotika is the village-like neighborhood under the Acropolis where cats outnumber tourists. Psiri at night for meze and live rembetika music. The Central Market for olives, cheese, and coffee so strong it qualifies as a personality trait. Give Athens two full days, not the one-day stopover everyone plans.
Santorini
Yes, it's crowded. Yes, it's expensive. And yes, the caldera view at sunset is still one of the best things you'll ever see. The trick is staying in Imerovigli or Firostefani instead of Oia — same view, half the price, none the crowds. Skip the sunset in Oia itself; watch it from a winery or a taverna in Pyrgos instead. The beaches are volcanic and dramatic, not sandy and calm. Red Beach, Black Beach, the hot springs near the volcano. Santorini is beautiful and complicated — like Greece itself
Crete
The island that has everything and asks for nothing. Chania's Venetian harbor for sunset dinners. The Samaria Gorge for a hike that empties your mind. Elafonissi for pink sand and shallow water that looks fake. The food is the best in Greece — dakos, gamopilafo, honeyed cheeses from mountain villages. Cretans are fiercely proud and genuinely welcoming. You come for a few days, you stay for a week, you start looking at property listings. It happens to everyone.
The Cyclades
Naxos for the beaches and the mountain villages where time stopped. Paros for the nightlife and the fishing harbors. Milos for the wildest coastline in Greece — Sarakiniko beach looks like the moon, and the Kleftiko sea caves are only reachable by boat. Folegandros for the cliff-top chora and the sunset that rivals Santorini without the Instagram queue. The ferry connections are the puzzle. I solve them so you don't spend your vacation at a port.
The Peloponnese
Everyone flies to the islands and ignores the mainland. The Peloponnese is ancient Olympia, the theater at Epidaurus, the medieval fortress towns of Mystras and Monemvasia. Nafplio is the prettiest town in Greece — Venetian, Ottoman, Greek, layered and walkable. The Mani peninsula is wild, empty, and dramatic.
